My Skills, My Future 2024 event helps young people with SEND choose their next step.

Date: 13 May

The event, organised by the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Careers Hub, featured exhibitors, refreshments, and an opportunity for students to learn about employment paths available to them following school.

Frankie Rigolli, Employment Coordinator at the Careers Hub, said: “This year’s event – held in a different, more intimate venue – was designed for students who have additional learning and support needs, including those from Cornwall’s Special Schools and Area Resource bases.”

“Our aim with My Skills, My future 2024, alongside offering the opportunity for networking and learning, was that, although they will be far outside of their comfort zones, students feel safe and reassured… with the chance to develop skills and explore options for their future that they might not have thought possible.”

On the day, students tried their hands at first aid with the Cornwall Training and Consultancy Ltd, seed sowing with Kehelland Trust and explored technology with Truro and Penwith Collage.

There was also a break out space, where visiting students were able to try out Lego activities with the team from Cornwall Education Business Partnership.

Vicky from Access Cornwall said: “It was such a pleasure to play a part in this year’s My Skills My future event, talking to young people all about our work experience opportunities doing accessibility reviews around Cornwall.”

“It was also an exciting day for us because we launched our brand-new magazine, Open Doors, which was written by students with SEND, for students with SEND, all about supporting employers to be inclusive employers – so it fitted perfectly.”

Frankie concluded: “This has been a wonderful morning – the atmosphere and the conversations were what it’s all about. It’s great to see so many young people asking vital questions about careers, and so many professionals from a variety of fields offering advice, insights and, ultimately, opportunities.”
